We want to give members a clear view of how player placements are decided for events such as the Mixed Shield, the Summer Championships, and other grouped or graded formats.
The aim is enjoyable and competitive tennis for everyone. To try to achieve that, the Club Captains and Vice-Captains (and any other sub-committee volunteers involved) work with the information that is actually available to them. That information comes from involvement and results in activities such as DLTC league, internal tournaments or competitions (e.g. ladders and box leagues), the Club Championships, any challenge matches organised by the Club, and from observations or knowledge of Club coaches and Captains.
Friendly games, private matches, and ad-hoc competitions between members are not used.
Some players have a large body of results because they take part in DLTC league and internal competitions. Others may have played only one competition in the year, often against the same few people. This naturally limits the data available.
Numbers also matter. If a competition consists of different levels and the number of entrants overall is low or lower than before, or the number of entrants at a particular skill level is low or lower than before, players may find themselves competing at a different level to that played previously (up or down) in order to ensure sufficient numbers of players are participating at each level so that the competition viable.
We do not publish individual seedings for every competition. This is intentional. However, the data is kept and used to create competitions that are workable, competitive, and as fair as possible across all levels.
Every decision is made using the best information available. It may not be perfect as the data is finite, as is time available, particularly as those involved in organising and managing Club competitions, league teams, charity events, and club activities are doing so on a volunteer basis.
We are exploring software options to help improve tracking and assessment in the future.
The simplest way to support fairness in future competitions is to encourage more members to enter the events we organise. More entrants means better grouping options, more accurate placement, and more opportunities for everyone to compete at the right level.
Events such as the Mixed Shield, the Club Championships, the various American tournaments, league hitting sessions, leagues, and our upcoming Club Open all benefit from strong participation.
If you have concerns or suggestions, please use the feedback form below. These submissions go directly to the committee and are reviewed at upcoming committee meetings. This is the most effective way to help us improve competitions going forward.
